There are in fact 10 steps to Heaven (Pumphouse Heaven that is)

I am officially on my holidays, and had decided that I would stay clear of Plas Newydd this morning as the lifting of the pumphouse into position was taking place (I did not want to jinx the whole thing). BUT….

Keith rang as I had asked him to do, and lets face it I was never going to be able to stay away for long.Having lived the dream of preparing for today I can now tell you there are in fact 10 steps to heaven (Heat pump heaven at least).Step 1 - Prepare your access to the siteStep 1 – Make sure you can get your 48 tonne crane to the place where you need it to be. We are working within tight confines and listed gardens, and need to make sure that the roads can take the weight and also are sufficiently wide to allow access. Then when we are done can be reinstated as they were before we started.Step 2 - pick your spotStep2 – Pick your spot! We reviewed the historic viewpoint maps of the garden and linked this aesthetic opportunity to once again open up the historic views of the Britannia Bridge and the Menai Strait with the width of the marine walk below to ensure the pumphouse would sit comfortable and allow access around it in the future.Step 3 Delivery access trackStep 3 – Prepare your delivery access track. Make sure that you can deliver your materials to the lifting point safely.Step 4 Crane lifting platformStep4 – Create your crane lifting platform. Ensure that the platform is constructed in such a way to provide a strong, level, secure base for the crane. Position the platform at the right point to ensure correct 45 degree lifting angles whilst making sure the crane can reach out far enough beyond the cliff. Protect the trees in the vicinity and spread the load evenly. Structural engineering at its best to ensure all of these considerations were accounted for and a “safe lift” could take place.Step 5 - Pumphouse arrives on siteStep 5 – Pumphouse gets delivered to site.Step 6 - Crane materials down to the marine walkStep 6 – Crane lift your materials down onto the marine walkway in preparation: Pipes, headwalls, concrete for the foundations.Step 7 - Deliver the pumphouse to the lifting areaStep 7 – Deliver the pumphouse to the lifting area (carefully). Transport the 4 tonne bespoke pumphouse building down to the lifting area.Step 8 - Check how heavy the pumphouse isStep 8 – Check the pumphouse weight before lifting over the edge. We discovered at this point that 3.5 tonnes actually means 4 tonnes when you add in the crane lifting block and strapping. This led to adjustments to our lifting platform to guarantee that 45 degree lifting angle.Step 9 - Prepare the pumphouse baseStep 9 – Preparation of the pumphouse base. Working with the tides our local civil engineers prepared the base in readiness for the pumphouse. This is the “stop your pumphouse floating away bit”. No average working day here – 0130 low tide means we are at work.Step 10 - the pumphouse has landedStep 10 – Finally all comes together as the pumphouse is lifted over the edge of the cliff and lowered into place. Settling nicely into position (only had to be repositioned by 6 inches to line up).In celebration I made Keith buy me lunch, had a coffee, and returned to my holiday once more with shoulders relaxing as I drove home.
